About the Effort

CrisisCommons, along with our friends in the greater volunteer technology community, continue to “stand at the ready” to provide volunteers with an ability to contribute to requests made by crisis response agencies in support response and recovery efforts of the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.

To date, 225 volunteers have signed up to contribute to this wiki project and to be offered to other volunteer technology projects like the Japan Crisis Map and other crowd sourced initiatives. CrisisCommons seeks to support crisis response organizations and their requests for data feeds and sources. This is an all volunteer effort and this wiki continues to be revised each hour.

Project Spotlight: Gathering Common Operational Datasets

  1. Sign up so we can be sure to thank you
  2. Ask the forum moderator on Skype, "What is the priority of the day?" (listed under Projects on the right here -->) for contribution of data sets to Sendai Data Profile and the Japan Data Profile
  3. Search for data feeds under the categories of outlined areas. We especially have interest in Japanese data feeds.
  4. Recommended that you pick one area to focus your efforts. Let the folks in the Skype chat know when you arrive, what areas you will be editing and when you leave. If you cannot edit a wiki, there are people on the Skype who can add that information to the wiki for you.
  5. If you have a recommendation or suggestion of how to do this better let us know and also please add to our Survey questions here.
  6. If you have a great idea and would like to work on it in the future let us know and please also please add to our Survey questions here.

Wiki 101

Open Data

  • Japan Data Profile - Join the effort to collect data feeds. This project was initially to support UN OCHA request. But as they are sending limited engagement to Japan, at Japan's request. We will continue this collection as a volunteer effort to mature the collection of Common Operational Datasets to provide input and recommendations back the UN as well as capture lessons learned from this task.
  • Here is how you can get started COD_101

Our current Focus:

  • Providing information about communications infrastructure in the affected region
  • Cleaning up the wiki, assessing information gaps
  • Doing QA pass on the wiki in preparation for translation to Japanese.

User Generated Crisis Data

User-generated crisis content, data and/or visualizations are often created during crisis events by the public (including technology volunteers). Below is a listing of public sites where information and content is searched for or derived by the public. Information may not be validated or be prototype in nature. Most of these listings are not connected to local emergency response authorities.
