Projects/Tasks/Stuff to Do - Detail
So these are the ongoing lists of things to do. We have 3 categories: A) Official requests that came to CrisisCommons from agencies/sources B) Other Sandy activities of the extended virtual digital volunteer communities C) Ongoing technical digital response work which may have started before Sandy, but is applicable. Please feel free to add or contact deborah (@) crisiscommons.org
*NOTE: DO NOT CHANGE THE PROJECT NAMES/NUMBERS - THEY ARE LINKED ABOVE (Unless, of course, you change the relative links too - smile)
A. CrisisCommons asks or initiated projects
A.1 Gas Map
- Need: The White House/FEMA has asked CrisisCommons, as well as other groups, to help define and direct an effort to help map the gas station availability. This effort will focus on collecting and gathering information on various gas maps, gathering information to seed maps, looking for open standards to connect/share info on maps, doing some maps, collaborating with other groups to create a complete gas map story, and focusing on the reporting/validation of map information from the public (usability), and looking how the virtual community can contribute to these initiatives.
- Request by: White House, Nov 2nd
- Groups: CrisisCommons, FEMA, ERSI, Google
For most current status and detail, see here: https://hackpad.com/ATx1TCEAHpS#hurricanesandy-gasmap-projects
A.2 NYU/NYC Hotel Availability
- Need: being qualified (by who?)
- Request by: NYU OEM
- Current CrisisCommons contact: pascal (@) crisiscommons.org // stempeck @ gmail.com // petey @ mit.edu, CC-BOSTON/HH
- Status: We're creating an online portal for contributions to a general fund for hotel room vouchers, and also looking into whether hotel chains will allow us to aggregate point donations in exchange for free rooms. See http://goo.gl/nqgs8 for more information and current status.
A.3 Rhode Island Damage Assessment
- Request by: Regional FEMA RI
- Current CrisisCommons contact: pascal (@) crisiscommons.org
- Contacts: willow - CCSEA
- Status: Partially started, decided to take this against an existing CC-SEA initiative, MadPub that helps with damage assessment.
- Need: more info
A.4 NY Hospital Status
- Need: The project to track "operational status" means we are determining if ops are normal, compromised, evacuated, closed essentially. We are also asking if they are on grid or generator.
- Request by: White House, FEMA, Nov 2
- Current CrisisCommons contact: david (@) Crisiscommons.org
- Groups working on: Sahana, David, PDX, SEA, SFO
- Status: Sahana Foundation has stood up an instance to track hospital and LTC Status.
- Some data sourced from agencies in NY, working on other data from NY and NJ.
- Current Need:
- People familiar with Sahana , users and devs.
- People familiar with HAVE open data standard for hospital info.
- Trusted contacts within local EOC's and other agencies that can supply verified data
- project extended info: https://docs.google.com/document/d/173tC8BBhDg7LHYzVNDHm3zEnXxH9eqkEhzIl7ZzveLw/edit
- Sahana Instance: http://sandy.sahanafoundation.org
- Please do NOT call hospitals without consulting the project head
A.5 NYC Hospital Evacuation and Availability
- Need: Person in a health care facility is evacuated. Can be in an orderly manner, or not very ordered. You don't know where they went. After a disaster, we have to check now where what person from where is in what hospital now. Then we can get them back to their place of origin. Provide that info to their loved ones and to their physicians. Information gets pushed to an automated contact. If no contact is found, info is added to Safe and Well (anything HIPPA compliant) Asking org: NY Medicine Status: curated
- Request by: NYC Medical
- Current contact: willow (dot) bl00 (@) gwob.org, SEA was working on this
- Status: Not Active - This project deals with a lot of issues related to personal identifiable data, privacy, and other security concerns. Data timeliness and accuracy is also a challenge. We recognize the need but the digital online volunteers alone cannot solve this and need to have trusted partnerships with organizations, both response and medical, to succeed.
B. General Extended Virtual Community Activities and Projects or asks
The CrisisCommons extended community has lots of stuff going on in support of Sandy, so check out some of these below. Some of these are official requests as well. Add anything too if you know of something.

B.6 Maryland Damage Assessment
- Request by: FEMA, Maryland
- Community: HumanityRoad, CrisisCommons
- Status: Deactivated, this project is no longer active
- Need: tbd
B.7 Map of the Maps
- Community: SBTF
- Info: A good hackathon project would be to produce a map with either all these sub-maps added to it so if you live in-between areas you can see what's happening in the towns around you; or a map with a polygon for the area that each power company covers, so you can click on your home and get all the maps that cover your area. OpenSignal.com is probably a good design pattern for this.
B.7 DoE - Getting the Kids back to School on Monday
(yes, two B.7's, so what)
Goal: Getting the kids to school on Monday!
- Working on: Boston-HH
- Info on Project: The most recent copy of these notes is in hackpad. https://hackpad.com/DE7G6wotaHv##hurricanehackers---schools-open/closed

- Parse data that is being uploaded to the schools.NYC.gov site.
- Have data visible across the web and mobile web.
- Community: Montreal CrisisCamp
